Installing USB drivers for 9 and 24 Xstream Radio Modems on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC

These instructions assume the following:

  • You are logged on with administrator rights.
  • Have an active internet connection.
  • A remote device (RF modem plus logger) for end-to-end testing that has been programmed/assigned a Channel and ID (Ex: ID 100 and Channel 5).

Current Situation: "Windows Update Cannot Find the Correct Driver."



Manual Installation:

  1. Open a web browser and go to www.digi.com.
  2. Select "Support Drivers" from the menu bar.
  3. Select "9XStream X09-009 USB" or "24XStream X24-009-USB" from the scrolling text box.
  4. Select "9XStream, USB, 9600 baud, Commercial - X09-009PKC-UA (printed on the reorder form PN: label).
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  6. Click on "X32/X64 driver for Windows 7/Vista can be found here".
  7. Save the file to your desktop or other convenient location.
  8. After the download is complete, double-click on the .ZIP File folder icon.
  9. Windows Explorer should open. Now select the folder "COM 2.04.06 WHDL Certified" from the menu bar and select "Extract all files to unzip the files".
  10. Connect the XStream RF modem to the PC via the USB cable.
  11. Windows will report that the driver could not be found or installed.
  12. Double-click on the computer icon located on the desktop and select "System Properties" >> "Device Manager". X09-009PKC-U should show up under the "Other Devices" icon.
  13. Double-click on the icon and click the "Update Driver" button.
  14. Click on "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" and browse to "Desktop >> ftdi_WindowsVistaDriver. Make sure to that the "Include Sub-Folders" box is checked.
  15. If a message box appears that says "Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software." click on "Install This Driver Software Anyway".
  16. Click on "Close" after the installation is complete.
  17. The DIGI PKG-U USB Wireless Module Properties should say that the device is working properly now.
  18. In "Device Manager" double-click on "Other Devices >> USB Serial Port" and repeat the above steps to install the Virtual Serial Port driver.
  19. The DIGI PKG-U Serial Port Adapter should now appear under Ports(COM & LPT). Take note of which COM port is assigned to this virtual serial port. It will likely be COM4 or higher.
  20. Close Device Manager, etc.
  21. If the drivers are properly installed, the two columns of status LEDs on the RF modem should be lit as follows: In the 1st column the top two LEDs should be unlit and the bottom red LED should be lit. In the 2nd column all three of the green LEDs should be lit.
  22. Open the Logger Manager software (or install if required).
  23. Select the proper device type (Logger) as required. (Menu >> Device Type >> ex: VWMiniLogger.
  24. From the menu go to Options >> Comm Connector and select the virtual COM port that was created >> Ex: COM4.
  25. From Menu go to Comm Setup >> Select Spread Spectrum Radio and set the radio ID to the same ID as the remote test device ex: 100, and then go to Set Channel and set that to the same channel as the remote test device, ex: 5.
  26. From the Main screen click on "Setup", then "Retrieve Setup" to test the wireless connection.
  27. If the end-to-end wireless test is successful, the downloaded driver files can either be deleted or moved to another file location.
